What a great teacher. neat guy, and yes, a bit eccentric, in a good way. I chose history as a
major in part because of Dr. Chessman and his
colleagues. It was a great department back in the
mid 60's! Though I never intended to pursue teaching history at any level, I was flattered when
Dr. Chessman wondered if I had ever considered
graduate work in his field. He told be he thought
I should. His passing is a loss for all who knew him,
learned from him, and admired him. My condolences to his family and the University.

As a private college counselor and also the parent of five children who have graduated from college, you are right on. Now I just work with high school students and reassure their families that everything is going along well and according to plan. They are often nervous, upset, and confused by the entire college admissions process. I never saw the similarity to a pregnancy, but you have made that very apparent in an entertaining way.

Wally was my advisor when I was there only to last the first sixteen week semester in 1962. He helped me and was so kind. I remember his shirt with a torn elbow and how I was embarrassed because he didn't realize it. A week later he had the same shirt on and I realized he didn't even care and it didn't even matter. That made a big impression on me. Later in life I realized that much of my success was based on that lesson.

Today I was saddened to learn of the passing of Professor James Martin.Majoring in physics in 1975, I was skeptical when I began taking courses in religion. Fortunately for me it was required at that time. Professor Martin left me with a lifelong interest in these matters and many of his course's textbooks remain on my bookshelves, dog-eared and tattered from many readings. A few days ago,I was making a recording of some Joseph Campbell's lectures to send to my son. As I was introduced to Campbell by Dr. Martin, his teaching work truly continues. Many thanks for his work and may he rest in peace.

My greatest memory of Dr. Chessman was his undying support of the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Student group on campus (GLAD during my 1st two years and OUTLOOK during my last two years). He was always asking me (since I worked in the library and he always seemed to be in the library)what he could do to help us and, like the story above, would pass off money to me so the group could buy books on GLB topics for the Womens's Studies Resource Center. His support and caring for me and all other GLB students made my Denison time a joy when so many other GLB students struggled through their college years. I was saddened to hear of his passing but am so grateful I got to meet and know such a wonderful soul even after he had retired from teaching at Denison.

Ann Fitzgerald and I were school classmates from our early elementary years, when she "skipped" a grade to come into the class of '64, Conant High, in Jaffrey, NH. We were on the JV cheer-leading team together, sang in the school chorus, performed in the high school plays, etc. But Ann left me in the dust when it came to Latin and French classes! She was always very modest about her academic accomplishments, but we all knew she'd go on to do great things in academia.

After high school, the small group of girls who were so close lost track of Ann, catching only little tidbits of information about her whereabouts and accomplishments. But finally, in the summer of 2010, we caught up with Ann, and she joined a half dozen of us for a brief reunion at the Vermont home of one of the group.

It was as though those forty-five years had just gone by in a flash! Ann was just as lively and goofy as the rest of us, and we are all so thankful to have had that little get-together, with photos to remind us of the great time we had!

We actually did a similar sort of photo shoot a few years back and one of the guys with us was a diver.

He made us blow out all our air out on the way down which reduces buoyancy and make it easier to look like your standing/posing comfortably on the bottom of the pool - it was hard work but the photos looked cool, as I'm sure yours do too

Hi Emily,

Loved your description of your time at a press plant! We love the Denison magazine that Kathy Fuller '71 shares with us, and were wondering if you could clarify if it was printed on the web press at Watkins (I'm guessing since you talked about rolls of paper), or the sheet-fed press (although I believe you can now fit rolls into some sheet-fed presses). Thanks!

It's great that Denison has positioned itself in a leading role to raise awareness of global warming and the consequences of that - and doing something about it!

I look forward to reading more of your leadership in this field.

Looking at this through the modern day lens of "dating" and relationships, I'm always facinated by the courtship rituals from 100 + years ago - dance cards, dried flowers, "walking dates" (whatever those were). Definately a much more personal era, so to speak, than today's email/text/instant message society.
